Arsenal’s arrival to kick-start 10-day EPL mania in Malaysia

Arsenal’s arrival in Malaysia today will kick-start a 10-day tour of English Premier League teams including Liverpool and Chelsea.

Arsenal, whose last visit to Malaysia was almost 12 years, will be playing the national team at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil on Wednesday.

While Liverpool, making their maiden visit to our country, meet the national team on Saturday. Chelsea then take on a Malaysian selection at the same venue on July 21.

Arsene Wenger’s Gunners will complete their tour of Far East by playing Chinese Super League side Hangzhou Greentown on Saturday.

Arsenal’s French international Samir Nasri, linked to moves to Manchester United and Manchester City, will be joining his team-mates for the Far East tour.

Club captain Cesc Fabregas, who is rumoured to want a move Barcelona, will stay at home to recuperate from a hamstring injury.

The imminent signing of Lille striker Gervinho has not been completed in time for him to join the tour but Japanese teenage sensation Ryo Miyaichi, who had an impressive season on loan to Feyenoord, will be in the squad.

Miyaichi will be joined in the squad by fellow teenagers Emmanuel Frimpong and defender Carl Jenkinson who signed from Charlton in the summer.

The odds are stacked against Datuk K. Rajagopal’s boys getting a positive result against Arsenal but then the records show otherwise.

Malaysia, coached by Datuk M. Chandran, beat the Gunners 2-0 with a brace from Datuk Mokhtar Dahari on May 13, 1975 and two days later Isa Bakar scored a goal to hold the Gunners 1-1.
