Rookie international Ismail Faruqi is the smallest player in the Malaysian squad but the pint-sized Terengganu midfielder, who stands at 1.68m is ready to play a big role in national coach Datuk K. Rajagopal’s plan ahead of the Asian Zone World Cup second round first-leg qualifying match against Singapore at the Jalan Besar Stadium tomorrow.
Rajagopal was impressed with Ismail’s cool and composed performance in the second-half against Liverpool at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil last week.
It was Ismail’s first appearance with the national team and he passed the test with flying colours. Rajagopal had no hesitation in drafting Ismail into the national team to be on standby in case central midfielder Amar Rohidan is unable to pass a late fitness test.
“I am ready to accept the challenge anytime,” said Ismail, who was a key player in Terengganu coach Irfan Bakti’s success in landing the FA Cup title this season.
Ismail, 25, said that he was a mere passenger when he was first called up for the internataional friendly against Hong Kong last month.
“I did not get a chance to play but I am glad that I could show my abilities during the game against Liverpool. I hope to see more action.”
