Malaysia lost 6-3, but Safiq had the satisfaction of netting the best of the nine goals.
He curled in a free-kick in the 42nd minute to equalise for Malaysia after Charlie Adam’s early strike for Liverpool. Safee Sali contributed the other two goals for Malaysia while Liverpool’s other goals were scored by David Ngog (two), Maxi Rodriguez (two) and Dirk Kuyt.
It was Safiq’s third free-kick goal this month. In the Asian Zone World Cup first round qualifiers last month, he was on target twice against Taiwan.
Safiq was over the moon with his goal against the Reds.
“Hey, I’m a Manchester United fan. I’m really happy to score against Liverpool,” said Safiq.
Safiq said he was pleased with the team’s performance despite the defeat.
“We played better against Liverpool than we did in the 4-0 defeat by Arsenal on Wednesday. It is going to boost our confidence when we take on Singapore in the Asian Zone World Cup second round, first leg qualifiers against Singapore (on July 23),” added Safiq.
