Singapore Lions to plan for Malaysian league matches

Many people here are wondering who will be on the roster for the Singapore Lions team that will travel across the causeway next year to compete in the M-League, FA Cup and Malaysia Cup competitions.

Based on the memorandum of understanding signed by the Football Association of Singapore (FAS) and the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM), the Malaysian Tigers (the country's under-23 team) will play in the S-League and other domestic cup competitions here and they will be allowed to field up to four foreign signings.

The Singapore Lions will feature 25 local under-23 players, five senior local footballers and three foreign signings.

While the Courts Young Lions are the logical choice to represent Singapore in the M-League, Football Association of Singapore (FAS) president Zainudin Nordin said the selection is being worked out and a final decision will be made later.

The team, currently in 10th spot in the 2011 Great Eastern-Yeo's S-League, are made up of under-23 players.

Courts chief executive officer Terry O'Connor told MediaCorp that his company, which has a sponsorship agreement with the Young Lions until the end of next year, have not been told if the boys will play in Malaysia.

"But if we are competing in the M-League next year, it will be a bonus for us because Courts have a strong presence in Malaysia," he said.

Zainudin gave the assurance that although the goal of the FAS and FAM is to develop talent, the teams will be playing to win.

Said the FAS chief: "Our first priority is for youth development. But we also have a clause to allow us to adjust the make-up of the team in the event the under-23 players, at any stage, are too weak to compete ... and win competitions.

"We are going to Malaysia to win and that will remain our objective."
