Singapore players full of confidence

The Singapore football team were in a relaxed and jovial mood during their first training session at the Maybank Sports Complex here yesterday.

The Lions are in a buoyant mood after beating Malaysia 5-3 in the first leg of the Asian Zone World Cup second round qualifying match at the Jalan Besar Stadium on Saturday. Singapore skipper Shahril Ishak admitted the players were in good spirits after their unexpected big win.

“We are all in a good mood after the victory at home and the morale among the players is good ahead of the second leg on Thursday,” said Shahril after the training session.

“We didn’t expect to win by such a big scoreline and it’s certainly a boost for our confidence stepping into the second leg.”

The midfielder said the players have decided not to celebrate yet as their task remains incomplete.

“I have told the players that it is too early to celebrate as we still have to play the second leg in front of the Malaysian supporters,” said the 27-year-old Shahril.

“There’s so much pressure playing in front of a big crowd and I have heard about how passionate the Malaysian fans are.

“But I believe we can cope.Malaysia have shown that they can play when they made a comeback by scoring two goals in the second half, so we have a tough game ahead.”
