Telekom invests RM24mil for national team

PETALING JAYA: Telekom Malaysia Berhad (TM) has inked a deal to pump in more than RM24mil into the FA of Malaysia (FAM) for the next four years in a bid to elevate the national football’s team standard on the international stage.

That’s not all. TM are also offering a RM1mil incentive to the national team for every international tournament they win.

FAM deputy president Tengku Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah applauded TM for doing their part towards the development of the game in Malaysia.
“Since the government’s ban on cigarette companies some time ago, the FAM lost their financial backing. It was then that we engaged TM to be our title sponsor of Liga Malaysia in 2005,” said Tengku Abdullah after the signing ceremony of the agreement with TM Group chief executive officer Datuk Seri Zamzamzairani Mohd Isa at the Wisma FAM in Kelana Jaya yesterday.
“Yes ... it’s a new avenue to raise the image of the national team.
“Of course, the annual sum of RM6mil per year is insufficient compared to what Asian giants like Japan enjoy. They have a budget of US$40mil for the national team’s development programmes annually.”

Tengku Abdullah also called on more sponsors to come forward and help the national team.
“We hope TM will also consider assisting our national age-group teams. We have the national Under-23 teams for the SEA Games and Asian Games,” said Tengku Abdullah.
He said FAM would be more professional in their organisation, with the formation of the national team division at the Wisma FAM soon.
“We want the national team to be run professionally. We want to show the players that the national team mean business,” said Tengku Abdullah, who hopes that the department would also look into the welfare of ex-internationals.

Zamzamzairani, who announced the RM1mil incentive, also promised to send two players and a coach for short-term attachment with English Premier League champions Manchester United in England or the club’s academy in Dubai, the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
“Through this partnership, TM has joined hands with FAM to directly contribute towards the development and management of the national team,” said Zamzamzairani, who added that the first part of their initial contribution of RM3mil will be paid by this month.

Under the agreement, TM’s logo will appear on the Malaysian football team’s training jerseys and other sporting goods, training gear and official formal wear.

National team manager Datuk Subahan Kamal described TM’s cash injection as a great boost for the national team, who are preparing for the Asian Zone World Cup second round qualifying match against Singapore.
“We have plans to go abroad for more extensive training stints. Now we will take advantage of TM’s support to strengthen our position in this region,” said Subahan.

Malaysia, who defeated Taiwan on the away goals rule (4-4 on aggregate) in the first round, will face Singapore next.
The first leg will be held at the Jalan Besar Stadium on July 23 and the return leg at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil on July 28.

Earlier this year, the FAM received a shot in the arm when Astro signed a RM120mil four-year deal to become the Malaysian Super League’s (MSL) official broadcast media partner.
Astro also agreed to allocate an additional RM100mil for the MSL promotional campaigns.
