Negri Sembilan’s Abdul Razak twins – Mohd Aidil Zafuan and Mohd Zaquan Adha – believe the Deer will be back at their best when the Malaysia Cup competition kicks off on Sept 6.
The brothers have missed most of the season with injuries and were sorely missed by Negri, who finished eighth in the Super League and were knocked out by Kuala Lumpur in the second round of the FA Cup.
However, Negri are looking strong for the Malaysia Cup campaign now that most of their injured players have recovered.
Centreback Norhafiz Zamani Misbah and striker Ahmad Fakri Saarani have returned from their long lay-off through injuries and featured for the Malaysian Selection and the national team last month.
Even striker Zaquan, who had undergone two anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) surgeries on his left knee and only played three games in the Super League this season, has returned to training.
“I have been training for the past one month after recovering from my second ACL operation and I’m looking forward to playing again,” said Zaquan at the Herbalife NW Formula launch here yesterday.
“Almost all the injured players have returned and Negri will be back at its best for the Malaysia Cup ... but we still have to be wary of our opponents,” he said.
“We can’t afford to underestimate teams like PKNS and Sime Darby in our group. We also need to work on the teamwork and understanding.” (The other team in Group D are Terengganu.)
Meanwhile, Zaquan’s elder brother Aidil is hoping for a quick recovery after injuring his medial collateral ligament (MCL) in the second leg of the World Cup second round qualifier against Singapore recently.
Aidil was a part of the Malaysian defence which came under heavy criticism following Malaysia’s 4-6 aggregate defeat to Singapore in the qualifier last month.
Negri defeated Kelantan 3-1 in 2009 to hoist the Malaysia Cup for the second time in their history.
Last year, they failed to defend the title after losing 1-2 to Kelantan in the final.
