T-Team signs new players for Malaysia Cup campaign

Terengganu club side T-Team have signed up a goalkeeper and a striker to strengthen their challenge for next month’s Malaysia Cup competition.

T-Team coach Yunus Alif confirmed yesterday the signing of goalkeeper Mohd Jibrail Kamron Baharin from Pos Malaysia and Muar Municipal Council FC hitman Mohd Fitri Omar.

“Although we already have three goalkeepers, we had to rope in Jibrail because our first choice – Mohd Syamsuri (Mustafa) – is injured,” Yunus said in a telephone interview from Kuala Terengganu yesterday.

“Mohd Syamsuri injured his knee during our clash against Sabah at the tailend of the Super League season. He has undergone surgery and is recovering.”

Yunus also said that they had signed up Fitri because “he has scored goals consistently for his Premier League club Muar MC”.

Fitri’s 15-goal haul for Muar MC saw him become the Premier League top scorer.

However, the veteran coach was quick to warn that neither would be automatic choices and that they would have to prove their worth if they wanted to be thrown into the fray for the Malaysia Cup competition, which will kick off on Sept 6.

Jibrail will have to contend with Ismail Abdul Rahman and Mohd Zaini Hafiezi – for the right to be first choice goalkeeper while Fitri will have to compete with the likes of Hari Safwan Kamal, Mohd Nor Farhan, Shamsul Kamal and Indra Putra Mahayuddin for the right to lead the strikeforce.

Meanwhile, Yunus has been busy whipping his players into shape despite the fasting month, getting his players to train at night.

He has also also lined up a series of away warm-up matches before they head for a five-day break for the Hari Raya holidays.

The team will face Sime Darby FC (Aug 16), newly-promoted Selangor PKNS (Aug 18), Felda FC (Aug 20) and newly-crowned Super League champions Kelantan (Aug 24).

For the Malaysia Cup competition, T-Team have been drawn in Group D with Selangor, Kuala Lumpur and Police.
