Malaysia to play 2 friendly matches before Olympic qualifers

The national Olympic football squad will play two friendly matches before facing Japan on Sept 21, in the first leg of the 2012 London Olympics Asian Zone third round qualifying match.

Olympic team coach Ong Kim Swee said the national Olympic squad would play against an Iraqi football club, Al-Arbil on Sept 9 and the Oman Olympic squad on Sept 14, in Kuala Lumpur.

"The two matches are important to prove the real capability of Malaysia. I will use the matches to determine whether to take 18 or 21 players for the match against Japan," he told reporters at Wisma FAM Thursday.

He said the Olympic squad would be facing Japan in Tosu, Fukuoka and to prepare for the match, 21 players reported for a 15-day centralised training at Wisma FAM in Kelana Jaya, today .

Meanwhile, Ahmad Hazwan Bakri who was part of the squad would only report for training tomorrow since he could not get a flight ticket to Kuala Lumpur from Labuan, he said.

In the third round draw on July 7, Malaysia were drawn together with Japan, Syria and Bahrain in Group C.

South Korea, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Oman were drawn in Group A while Group B comprises Australia, Iraq, Uzbekistan and UAE.

On his charges, Ong said: "Even though they are still in hari raya mood, the players have shown strong commitment by reporting according to schedule and I believe the players are very focused on this training camp."

Players who reported today were Khairul Fahmi Che Mat, Mohd Izuan Solahuddin (Kelantan) Mohd Zubir Mohd Azmi (Terengganu), Mohamad Faizal Abu Bakar (Kedah), Mohd Azrif Nasrulhaq (PKNS), Muhammad Nazmi Faiz, Muhammad Syazwan Tajuddin (Harimau Muda B), Abdul Shukor Jusoh, K. Gurusamy Govandar, Izzaq Faris Ramlan, Mahalli Jasuli, Mohamad Amer Saidin, Mohammad Muslim Ahmad, Mohd Fandi Othman, Mohd Ferris Daniel Mat Nasir, Mohd Izham Tarmizi, Muhammad Zamir Selamat, Nazirul Naim Che Hashim, Syahrul Azwari Ibrahim, Thamil Arasu Ambumamee, Wan Zaharulnizam Wan Zakaria (Harimau Muda A).
