Terengganu need to sort out defence

Terengganu’s defence is in shambles and coach Irfan Bakti knows it could well turn out to be their Achilles heel if nothing is done about it in the ongoing Malaysia Cup campaign.

Terengganu have two wins under their belt. They scored a 3-0 win over Sime Darby in their first match but it was Saturday’s 3-2 win over PKNS that showed the flaws in the backline.

Irfan said the Turtles’ defence was quite fragile when under attack.

“We changed our tactics in the second half and it paid off. We got lucky when we were rewarded a penalty as it turned out to be the winning goal,” he said.

He praised the Turtles’ attack but conceded that the defence must improve tremendously.

“We will go back to the drawing board and ensure the defence is more organised and tight. We will look back at the errors committed and ratified it ahead of our Group B match against Negri Sembilan on Tuesday,” he said.

“I have the utmost faith that my boys can clinch a win against Negri. However, they must not let the two previous wins go to their heads. We have to be focused for every game,” said Irfan, adding that underestimating Negri Sembilan would be their biggest mistake.

Meanwhile, PKNS coach Abdul Rahman Ibrahim said his team were outclassed by the Turtles.

“Terengganu played at a higher tempo and our players struggled to keep up. We were aggressive in attack but lacked tactical knowledge,” he said.

PKNS will face Sime Darby in the second Group B match MBPJ Stadium tomorrow.
