Ten-man Negri Sembilan overcame a jittery start to their Malaysia Cup campaign when they edged Premier League champions PKNS FC 2-1 in a Group B match at the MBPJ Stadium here yesterday.
PKNS took a surprise lead through midfielder Mohd Norhafizuan Jailani in the seventh minute before Negri hit back through striker Hairuddin Omar in the 18th minute and winger Shahurain Abu Samah in the 45th minute.
Negri, however, suffered a blow 11 minutes after the restart when goalkeeper Farizal Marlias was shown the red card for bringing down PKNS striker Mohd Ashidi Dilashar outside the box.
PKNS doubled their efforts to grab the equaliser but Negri, though a man short, stood firm.
In another Group B match, FA Cup champions Terengganu cruised to a 3-0 win over Sime Darby FC at the Selayang MC Stadium.
The Turtles needed just seven minutes to open accouints through talismanic winger Joseph Kallang Tie.
Midfielder Reeshafiq Alwi then doubled their lead in the 35th minute before striker Abdul Manaf Mamat put the finishing touch with the third goal in the 85th minute.
In Group A, Kedah had no problems overcoming Johor 2-0 at the Larkin Stadium while Sabah held Perak to a 0-0 draw at the Likas Stadium in Kota Kinabalu.
National winger Mohd Khyril Muhymeen Zambri was the hero for Kedah when he scored a brace – in the sixth and 81st minutes.
