Terengganu start intensive training for Malaysia Cup

The Hari Raya mood is still in the air but that did not stop Terengganu from cracking the whip.

With the Malaysia Cup campaign all set to begin on Tuesday, Terengganu cut short their holidays and checked into camp for intensive training on Thursday – the third day of the Hari Raya celebrations.

The Turtles have a good reason for being dead serious with their preparations - they do not want a repeat of last year’s nightmarish start.

Last year, the Turtles had only one point out of a possible nine from their first three Malaysia Cup matches and were staring at an early exit.

Only a strong revival in the second round matches saved them the blushes as Terengganu went on to make the cut for the quarter-finals, where they lost 2-5 to Kedah on aggregate.

FA Cup champions Terengganu, however, have set themselves a modest initial target of just making it to the knockout stage again this year.

Terengganu are in Group B of the Malaysia Cup with Sime Darby, Negri Sembilan and newly-crowned Premier League champions Selangor PKNS.

“Yes, we are determined to do better than last year,” said coach Irfan Bakti, who led Terengganu to the FA Cup glory in June.

“We also want to make up for our disappointment for finishing second behind Kelantan in the Super League. That’s why we have decided to cut short our Hari Raya holidays and get down to work immediately.”

The Turtles will open their Malaysia Cup Group B campaign against Premier League side Sime Darby on Tuesday.
