Selangor go down to Under-23 reserves

Malaysian Under-23 reserves beat Selangor 4-2 in a friendly football match at the Wisma FAM in Kelana Jaya yesterday.

The core players for the Under-23 squad preparing for the Indonesia SEA Games are currently with the national senior team in Canberra for the friendly international against Australia.

National Under-23 coach Ong Kim Swee has only the reserve squad in training with 10 players in Canberra and another three on loan with FC Vion in Slovakia.

“There were positive signs in the squad as the boys are all fighting for places for the SEA Games next month,” said Kim Swee.

The Under-23 squad’s goal scorers were D. Saarvindran, A. Thamil Arasu (penalty), See Kok Luen and Hazwan Bakri while the Red Giants, preparing for the quarter-finals of the Malaysia Cup competition, reduced the deficit through Azidan Saruddin and K. Deepan (penalty).

The 10 Under-23 players with the senior squad are Khairul Fahmi Che Mat (Kel), Muhd Zubir Azmi (Ter), Mohd Asraruddin Putra Omar (Sel), Baddrol Bakhtiar (Kedah), Mohd Muslim Ahmad, Mahalli Jasuli, K. Gurusamy, Izzaq Faris Ramlan, Syahrul Azwari Ibrahim and Wan Zaharulnizam Wan Zakaria (Harimau Muda A).

The players on loan with the Slovakian club are Mohd Fadhli Shas, Wan Zack Haikal Wan Nor and Mohd Irfan Fazail.

The Under-23 team have another friendly against Nepal scheduled for Oct 15. The first competitive test for the SEA Games squad would be in the VFF Invitational Under-23 tournament in Hanoi from Oct 17-24. Hosts Vietnam, Uzbekistan and Indonesia will be featuring in the round-robin competition.
