Terengganu Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Ahmad Said wants the police to be more effective in curbing volatile football fans.
He said last week the Federal Reserve Unit (FRU) personnel were slow to react to fans throwing bottles at players and match officials during the Malaysia Cup home match against Negri Sembilan at the Sultan Ismail Stadium. He hoped such incidents would not be repeated during the Malaysia Cup quarter-final first leg match against Kelantan at home on Monday.
“The FRU personnel must be stationed at every corner of the stadium to prevent any unwanted acts. They must be pro-active and be on stand-by in case the fans of both teams act violently,” he told newsmen after the state executive council meeting here yesterday.
Ahmad said he expects the encounter between the two east coast neighbours to attract strong emotions between the fans of both teams, thus the police must be extra vigilant.
He also reminded the fans to be mindful of their behaviour as any act such as throwing bottles, shooting fireworks and even shouting lewd words will be recorded via video cameras located throughout the stadium.
“It is upsetting and embarrassing to see local fans acting like hooligans. It is unacceptable and any fans who break the law will have to face the music,” he said.
On his hopes for the quarter-final match, Ahmad said Terengganu must win big before the return leg in Kota Baru on Oct 14.
“We stand a good chance of progressing to the semi-finals if we win at home. I want the players to give their best shot as this is a do-or-die stage in the competition. What the fans want is good football and I am confident both teams can provide that,” he added.
