Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak proposed that an Asian professional football league be established to improve the quality of Malaysian football.
He said the Malaysian team's gold medal win at SEA Games in Indonesia last month should become a platform to create more achievement at higher level.
"We can't reward ourselves for just being the region's champion, but must be a global champion. Don't be easily satisfied with the success so far," he said at Skim Hadiah Kemenangan Sukan (Shakam) ceremony at Stadium Juara, Bukit Kiara here Friday.
At the ceremony, he presented prizes totalling RM629,996 to 91 athletes who won gold medals at SEA Games in Indonesia recently.
Also present were Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek and the national under 23 football squad (Harimau Muda).
When met, Shabery said that he would discuss the proposal with Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) president Sultan Ahmad Shah to study the government approach.
"The football league of Asian countries have undergone a lot of transformation.
"Myanmar is a good example as its league is driven by the private sector where every corporate body is required to adopt a club."
He will also bring the matter up at Asean Sports Ministers meeting in Yogyakarta from Dec 13-15.
