Tunku Mahkota Johor Tunku Ismail Ibni Sultan Ibrahim has taken over as president of the Johor FA.
Tunku Ismail, a keen polo and football player, announced via Twitter yesterday that he aimed to kick out the politics and bring back the glory days of Johor hockey.
He also urged the Johor government and State Sports Council to play an active role in promoting sports among the youth.
Tunku Ismail called on them to educate youths to excel through sports.
Tunku Ismail said he would provide further details at a press conference soon.
Former Johor FA president Md Jais Sarday said they welcomed Tunku Ismail’s decision to take over as president.
“Tunku Ismail cares about the team and has never failed to attend any of their games and training sessions,” he said yesterday.
The Johor football team won the Malaysia Cup in 1985 and the double in 1991.
Their fortunes have since spiralled downwards due to alleged match-fixing and bribery among players as well as financial constraints faced by the Johor FA.
