Bahrain destroys Malaysia's chance in Olympic qualifier

Malaysia’s Olympic dream was shattered after they were beaten 2-1 by Bahrain in their Asian Zone Olympic Group C qualifier at the National Stadium in Manama yesterday.

Bahrain went ahead in the 25th minute through Mohammed Al Alwi before substitute Ahmad Hazwan Bakri equalised for Malaysia in the 85th minute.

The homesters had the last laugh when Husain Al Farhan clinched the winner in the 89th minute.

Syria’s 2-1 upset over Japan in another Group C match put paid to Malaysia’s slim hopes of earning a playoff spot.

Malaysia lost all three of their first-leg matches – going down 2-0 to Japan and Syria, and 3-2 to Bahrain last year – and their fourth defeat yesterday left them bottom of Group C.
