The Harimau Muda boys got off to winning start in their S-League debut when they defeated Gombak United FC 2-0 at the Jalan Besar Stadium yesterday.
A. Thamil Arasu opened accounts for the national Under-23 side in the 15th minute before Wan Zaharulnizam Zakaria increased the lead in the 82nd minute.
The Malaysian team, under coach Ong Kim Swee, could have won by a bigger margin if not for their poor finishing in front of goal. Midfielder Gary Steven Robbat also had a chance to put his name on the score sheet but his goal-bound shot deflected off a defender in the 75th minute.
The Malaysians, who play Tanjong Pagar United FC next on March 2, will return home to prepare for their penultimate home fixture against Japan (Feb 22) in the Asian Zone Olympic qualifying tournament.
