The Ministry of Youth and Sports plans to build stadiums specifically for football.
Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek said such stadiums would only be used for football and not for any other purpose.
Ahmad Shabery said his ministry was in the process of studying options whether to build new stadiums or refurbish existing ones.
"The plan is still in the proposal stage. We feel such a plan is necessary because what we have now are used for various activities, including athletics meets.
"We need to break away from tradition to develop football. To do that we need to maintain the stadiums and pitch. Trainings need to conducted elsewhere and stadiums reserved for matches," he told reporters at the KAWAT-Exxon Mobil 2011 Media Awards here.
He said the ministry was in the final stage of identifying locations for building such stadiums using artificial turf recognised by FIFA.
"We have a choice of building stadiums with artificial turf and we have short listed various types of turf suitable for use and meet the FIFA specification.
"To build pitches with artificial turf is slightly expensive must cheaper in the long run when maintenance of natural fields are taken into account," he said.
