Kelantan extend lead in Super League

Super League holders Kelantan extended their lead at the top of the standings after edging Negeri Sembilan 2-1 at the Sultan Mohd IV Stadium last night.

Winger S. Chanturu was the toast of the Red Warriors when he struck the winner in the 93rd minute.

Kelantan skipper Mohd Badri Mohd Radzi’s opener in the second minute was cancelled out by Negeri striker Mohd Shakir Ali in the 54th. With the win, the east coast side have 20 points from nine matches and they lead neighbours Terengganu by three points.

Negeri are seventh with 12 points from nine matches. Kelantan made a rousing start last night when Badri’s shot took a wicked deflection off Negeri defender G. Mahathevan before beating Negeri goalkeeper Farizal Marlias.

Buoyed by the early goal, Kelantan pressed forward for more goals but they could do with the clinical finishing of striker Norshahrul Idlan Talaha, who was sidelined by injury.

The hosts were dealt a blow after their inspirational centreback S. Subramaniam picked up an injury towards the end of the first-half.

Subramaniam’s replacement, Mohd Farisham Ismail, took time to settle in the second-half and the Deer were quick to take advantage.

Striker Shakir outjumped the Kelantan defence to head home S. Kunalan’s corner for the equaliser.

Three minutes into time added on, Chanturu was the quickest to react in a goalmouth melee to stab home from close range.
