Selangor coach P. Maniam claims his side were unlucky to lose 1-0 to Singapore in the annual Sultan of Selangor’s Cup match at the Shah Alam Stadium on Saturday.
Selangor defender Asraruddin Putra Omar’s own goal gave the Lions their sixth win since the inception of the series in 2001.
Singapore have won the Cup in 2004 (joint winners with MPPJ), 2006, 2007, 2009 and last year.
The Red Giants had more of the possession in Saturday’s match but failed to finish off the chances created by an attack bolstered by guest players, former Manchester United player Jesper Blomqvist and international Safee Sali.
“We were unlucky not to win the match. We just couldn’t finish off the chances we created,” said Maniam.
“The team played well and our guest players gave everything they had but then again, luck was not on our side.”
Selangor will need better luck and finishing if they are to meet their objective of winning their 33rd Malaysia Cup this season.
Maniam’s outfit face Perak in the quarter-finals with the first leg at the Shah Alam Stadium on Oct 10 and the return leg in Ipoh on Oct 14.
The lack of a clinical finisher remains a problem for Selangor since the departure of Safee to Indonesian club Pelita Jaya in February.
However, Maniam is not too concerned as his charges have scored six goals in their last two matches in the Malaysia Cup group stage.
“The players were not 100 per cent fit against Singapore but we have a few more days to prepare for the Malaysia Cup quarter-finals,” he said.

Singapore beats Selangor to win Sultan Of Selangor Cup
Singapore continued their dominance over Selangor, thanks to an own goal, in the annual Sultan of Selangor’s Cup match at the Shah Alam Stadium yesterday.
The tightly contested match saw Selangor defender Mohd Asraruddin Putra Omar heading the ball into his own net in the 65th minute.
Singapore’s 1-0 win in Shah Alam last night was their sixth since the inception of the series in 2001, having also triumphed in 2004 (joint winners with MPPJ), 2006, 2007, 2009 and 2010.
Singapore received RM50,000 while Selangor walked away with RM10,000 for finishing runners-up. The homesters last lifted the Cup in 2008 when they won 4-2.
The visitors paraded most of their national players spearheaded by lanky striker Aleksandar Duric, who was a constant threat to the Selangor backline with his sharp turns.
However, Selangor goalkeeper G. Jeevanathan was in his element as he made several crucial saves to keep the scoreline 0-0 in the first half.
Selangor had their fair share of chances to win the match but the Red Giants, bolstered by two former EPL players Jason McAteer (Liverpool), Jesper Blomqvist (Manchester United) and international Safee Sali, failed to breach the Lions’ backline marshalled by Daniel Bennet.
McAteer came close to opening the scoring towards the end of the first half with a free kick but Singapore keeper Lionel Lewis managed to tip his effort over the bar.
Selangor returned to the pitch with more urgency after the break.
Skipper Mohd Amri Yahyah’s shot was easily saved by substitute goalkeeper Mohd Izwan Mahbud in the 46th minute
Four minutes later, Amri’s free header hit the ground before trickling out of play in the 60th minute.
In the 80th minute, the crowd went wild when Amri had the ball in the net.
But it was not given as the striker was ruled to have handled the ball and was shown the yellow card.
Despite the result, Selangor gave a more decent performance compared to the side who were thrashed 6-0 last year.
Meanwhile, the Selangor veterans beat their Singapore counterparts 3-1 in the curtain raiser before the main event in front of 60,000 spectators.

Five minutes later, it was Dollah’s turn to hit the back of the net after some good passing inside the Singapore box.
The visitors reduced the deficit through Abdullah Noor in the 16th minute. Dollah was the hero for the Red Giants as he sealed the victory for the homesters with the third goal in the 39th minute.

Selangor aim for revenge against Singapore
The Red Giants will not let history repeat itself when they take on the S-League Selection in the annual Sultan of Selangor’s Cup football competition at the Shah Alam Stadium on Saturday.
Selangor head coach P. Maniam said he wanted his men to erase the humiliating 6-0 bashing they received at the hands of the visitors last year.
“It was a difficult game then as we had to face a strong Singapore side in the midst of our domestic calendar. The players barely had enough rest and went into the game only hours after arriving from Kota Baru,” said Maniam yesterday.
“But we will be better prepared this time.”
Singapore’s towering striker Aleksandar Duric, who scored a brace in the Lions’ thumping victory last year, will again lead the attack with the support of creative flankers Qiu Li and Shia Jiayi.
Maniam said he was aware of the threat posed by the strong S-League Selection, who are made up of mostly their national players.
“It is not a new experience to face Singapore ... but the fans’ expectations are high. In fact, even our national team could only hold them to a 1-1 draw in a pre-World Cup match in July,” said Maniam, who added that he would work out their game plan when they begin training tomorrow.
The Selangor coach will be counting on national striker Mohd Safee Sali, who has just completed a two-week training stint with English Division Two side Cardiff City, to lead the quest for goals on Saturday.
Safee had left Selangor early this year to join Indonesian Super League side Pelita Jaya FC.
Selangor have also been given added firepower following the inclusion of two former English Premier League (EPL) players – Jason McAteer and Jesper Blomqvist – in their side.
McAteer and Blomqvist, who once played for Liverpool and Manchester United respectively, are expected to join the Selangor training session on Friday.
This year’s Sultan of Selangor’s Cup is the 10th in the series. Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah had initiated the event in 2001 to foster better ties between Selangor and Singapore.
There will be two matches on Saturday. The first will be between the Selangor veterans and their Singapore counterparts (8pm) and the second match will see the Selangor Selection taking on the S-League Selection (9pm).
The champions of the Sultan of Selangor’s Cup will receive RM50,000 and the runners-up RM10,000.
Tickets, priced at a flat rate of RM10 for the two matches, are available at the Quality Hotel (Shah Alam & Kuala Lumpur), Concorde Shah Alam and Hard Rock Cafe Kuala Lumpur.
