Olympic squad coach to try more variations

Malaysian Under-23 coach Ong Kim Swee will be focusing on adding variety to the team play in their training-cum-playing stint in Slovakia from today to Aug 28.

The squad of 23 players will play six matches with Slovakian Division One clubs and one international friendly against a European Olympic side.

The Harimau Muda A team provide the bulk of the players while four new players – Azrul Azmi (Felda Utd), Mohd Azrif Nasrulhaq (PKNS), Ahmad Hazwan Bakri (K. Lumpur), Mohd Izuan Solahuddin (Kelantan).

“I will play different opponents with different playing styles. I’m confident that the players will be receptive to our programme in Slovakia,” said Kim Swee.

“We also have four new players in the team. I want to see whether they will be able to cope when playing at a higher level of competitiveness. An improvement of 10% to 25 % from the players will be a good outcome for the team’s third stint in Slovakia.”

The Under-23 squad have been drawn in Group C alongside Japan, Bahrain and Syria in the final round of the 2012 Olympic qualifiers.

Malaysia will start their campaign against Japan on Sept 21 before two home matches against Syria (Nov 23) and Bahrain (Nov 27).
