Selangor desperate to win Malaysia Cup

Selangor coach K. Devan is hoping to make up for his team’s disappointing run so far this season by guiding them to Malaysia Cup victory.

The Klang Valley giants are desperate to end the season with a silverware after finishing third in the Super League and being ousted in the FA Cup semi-finals by bitter rivals Kelantan.
Devan had guided the Red Giants to the Super League title twice in a row when he was appointed as coach in 2009.

However, the Red Giants have failed to get past the quarter-final stage of the Malaysia Cup in the last two seasons.

But things are looking rosy this time after Selangor were drawn in Group D with T-Team Terengganu, Kuala Lumpur and Police.

“The draw does look easy on paper ... but we won’t take our opponents for granted,” Devan said after the draw yesterday.

“We should make the quarter-finals without any problems. It’s getting past this hurdle that’s been a problem.”

The Red Giants have won the Malaysia Cup a record 32 times but their last triumph came in 2005.

Selangor will play against the national team at the Shah Alam Stadium tonight as part of their preparation for the Malaysia Cup, which will begin on Sept 6.

“We will play six friendly matches at home and one away as our preparation for the Malaysia Cup,” said Devan.

“We will use these matches to check out the players who are on loan with us as well as all our players’ fitness.”
