Malaysian striker Mohd Safee Sali is wanted by two English clubs – Premier League side Queens Park Rangers (QPR) and Division Two team Cardiff City.
Cardiff, however, have got a headstart on their Premier League rivals, having confirmed that Safee will attend trials with the Welsh club from Sept 12-27.
QPR manager Neil Warnock, meanwhile, only indicated that they would arrange a try-out for Safee with the first team during an online press conference exclusively for the Malaysian media yesterday.
Cardiff chairman Datuk Chan Tien Ghee yesterday confirmed that Safee’s trial was on.
“Safee’s club have responded and have approved to release the player for trials,” said Tien Ghee.
Safee is currently attached with Indonesian Super League side Pelita Jaya FC.
“If everything goes well, Safee will be the first Malaysian to play in England.
“We will give him a full trial ... the full works ... just like any other player. It will be up to the player to prove himself and the selection will be done on merit by the manager. It will be good for the player to know where he stands,” said Tien Ghee.
Safee’s contract with his current club Pelita Jaya FC will end on Jan 31, 2012.
“I’m happy and I am eager to attend the trials. I’m a bit nervous about the trials but I intend to give it my all and prove my credentials,” said the 27-year-old Safee.
“Every Malaysian football fan follows the English game and I’m no different.
“Even as a kid, I’ve always dreamt of one day plying my trade in the English league ... now I have a chance to do just that.”
Besides Safee, Cardiff have also agreed to try out national skipper Safiq Rahim next month.
“Safiq has commitments with his present club (Selangor) but he has said that he will come in late October,” said Tien Ghee.
Warnock, during the online press conference, described Malaysia as an emerging force in football.
“There will be opportunities now for Malaysians to come in ... without a shadow of a doubt we can help them and they can help us.
The Malaysian players have got the playing techniques ... and, in a matter of time, they will come to the fore,” said Warnock, who even described Safee as the “David Beckham” of Malaysia.
