Selangor international winger Mohd Amirulhadi Zainal has welcomed the loan signing of Haziq Zikri Elias, saying it would add quality – and more competition – to the team.
The 20-year-old Haziq, who played for English non-league club Stevenage Borough FC in 2007 before joining Harimau Muda in 2009, could well be the solution to Selangor’s strike woes.
The Klang Valley Giants scored a paltry 42 goals in 26 matches to end up third in the Super League this season.
Amirulhadi, who has been targeted by Selangor coach K. Devan to score more goals in the Malaysia Cup, which begins tomorrow, “relishes the challenge that Haziq brings to the Selangor starting line-up”.
“It’s good for the team to have more options on the flanks ... the team had limited attacking outlet during the Super League and it cost us the title,” said the lanky winger.
“Haziq has shown his capability in our friendlies and I like the competition he brings to the team. I enjoy competing with other players as it brings the best out of me.”
Selangor, who are gunning for a record 33rd Malaysia Cup title, are in Group D with Kuala Lumpur, T-Team and Police.
The Red Giants will start their campaign against T-Team at the Sultan Ismail Nasiruddin Shah Stadium in Kuala Terengganu tomorrow.
Selangor have also brought in defender Mohd Nazri Ahmad from Harimau Muda and USM FC goalkeeper G. Jeevanathan on loan to bolster their squad for the Malaysia Cup.
