Terengganu coach Irfan Bakti was full of anger despite the 1-0 win over Sime Darby in a Malaysia Cup Group B match at the Sultan Ismail Stadium in Kuala Terengganu on Saturday.
Mohd Ashaari Samsudin was the scorer, hitting home the winner in the 33rd minute to put the Turtles in second spot in the group on nine points. Negri Sembilan, also on nine points, top the standings with a better goal difference. PKNS FC are third on six points.
Terengganu could have overtaken Negri if not for their missed chances against whipping boys Sime Darby, who are still without a point. It was the Turtles’ profligacy that riled up Irfan.
“We were too complacent and some of the players were also selfish in front of goal. We were expecting a big win as we won 3-0 in an away match. On top of that, Sime Darby were without six of their regulars,” said Irfan.
“It was a very bad performance despite the win.
“This selfish attitude must be discarded if we want to proceed beyond the group stage,” said Irfan.
On their chances of reaching the knockout quarter-final stage, Irfan said: “ It is still a three-horse race. A bigger win over Sime Darby would have given us the edge when it comes to goal difference at the end of the day. We need to rectify the problems before our next game away to PKNS on Sept 24.”
The Turtles’ last game in the group is against Negri at home three days later.
