Terengganu in confident mood after winning opening match

It’s been a fruitful opening day for the two Terengganu teams – the state team and club side T-Team – on the opening day of the Malaysia Cup on Tuesday.

While T-Team edged Selangor 1-0 in a Group D match, Terengganu were more prolific after dispatching Sime Darby 3-0 in a Group B tie.

What’s pleasing about Terengganu’s win is that it erased memories of their horrendous start to the campaign last season.

Then, the Turtles lost the first three matches and nearly missed out on progressing to the knockout stage.

Goals by winger Joseph Kallang Tie, Reeshafiq Alwi and Abdul Manaf Mamat saw coach Irfan Bakti heaving a huge sigh of relief.

“I am proud of my players. I couldn’t have asked for more,” Irfan said just before heading back to Kuala Terengganu with his players yesterday.

“Although we only beat a Premier League side, a win is still a win and I am sure it will do my players a world of good. The three points are a good start and will surely calm our nerves ahead of tougher outings.”

The Turtles will now head home to prepare for their second group match against newly-promoted Selangor PKNS.

Terengganu will have to be wary of the threat posed by the Premier League champions, who will be looking to bounce back after losing 1-2 to Negri Sembilan.
