T-Team delighted after beating Selangor again

Terengganu club side T-Team can take pride in being the only home team to have won their opening Malaysia Cup match when the dust settled on Tuesday.

While the other home teams either lost or drew, T-Team edged 32-time champions Selangor 1-0 in a Group D match at the Sultan Ismail Stadium in Kuala Terengganu.

It was the club side’s third straight win over Selangor, having also won their two Super League matches earlier in the season.

And it has put a big smile on T-Team coach Yunus Alif’s face.

“It’s never easy to play against a side like Selangor, let alone beat them.

“It is even rarer to be able to beat them three times in a season,” said Yunus in a telephone interview from Kuala Terengganu yesterday.

“Credit to all my players. The win is down to their desire to prove that our two earlier Super League wins over Selangor were no fluke.”

Yunus also described the win as a great boost to team morale as well as a present for the boisterous T-Team supporters.

The home fans burst into joyous celebration when Norfazly Alias tucked home the winning goal off a corner kick in the 73rd minute and gave their heroes a standing ovation at the final whistle.

“It’s never easy when it comes to the opening match. So we have indeed cleared a very important hurdle in beating a side like Selangor,” said Yunus.

“Actually we could have won by a bigger margin had strikers Nor Farhan (Mohamad) and Indra Putra Mahayuddin not blown their goalscoring chances.

“But let’s not be greedy. It was already great that our fans gave us such a warm appreciation. I hope it will inspire them to continue giving their best.”

Yunus, who gave his players a day off yesterday, was quick to remind his men not to get too carried away with the victory “as it is only one game”.

T-Team’s next assignment is an away match against Kuala Lumpur, who are also riding high after a 3-0 win over Police, at the Selayang Municipal Stadium on Saturday.
