Olympic squad to play friendlies in Australia

The national Under-23 football team will embark on a three-match playing tour of Australia next week.

The team, who will report for training at Wisma FAM in Kelana Jaya tomorrow, will play Australian League sides Sydney FC (Dec 13), Central Coast Mariners (Dec 15) and Newcastle Jets (Dec 19).

Coach Ong Kim Swee said the 30 players would leave for Australia on Dec 10.
The friendlies will serve as a preparation for the remaining matches in the Asian Zone final round qualifying tournament for the 2012 London Olympics.

The team’s remaining matches are against Bahrain at the Bahrain National Stadium on Feb 5, Syria at the Prince Mohammed Stadium on Feb 22 and Japan at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil on March 14.

Malaysia’s hopes of making it to the Olympics are virtually over following defeats by Japan, Syria and Bahrain.
