Selangor signs national midfielder Gurusamy

Harimau Muda midfielder K. Gurusamy will be a Red Giant next season.

The 23-year-old central midfielder has been snapped up by Selangor to strengthen their squad.
Newly-appointed Selangor coach Irfan Bakti said it was a gem of an acquisition.

“We swooped immediately when we found out that Gurusamy was available. This is one player who can make a big difference to the team. His work rate and tireless running make him a huge asset,” said Irfan after the national football awards ceremony yesterday.

Gurusamy, a product of the Bukit Jalil Sports School (BJSS), moved up the ranks from the national Under-19 to the Harimau Muda A (Under-21) squads. He played a key role in Malaysia’s Under-23 football triumph at the 2009 Laos SEA Games under coach K. Rajagopal.

The following year, Gurusamy was roped into the senior team and was a member of the victorious Suzuki Cup squad under Rajagopal.

Last month, Gurusamy won his back-to-back gold medal at the Jakarta SEA Games under coach Ong Kim Swee.

Irfan said he was looking forward to the challenge of steering Selangor back to the forefront of Malaysian football.

“Selangor are like Manchester United and Real Madrid. The pressure is going to be greater than my stint with Terengganu but I am game for it,” said Irfan, who has to deliver at least one trophy next season.

Former Selangor coach K. Devan left at the tail end of the season with nothing to show.

Irfan said Devan had done well in winning four titles for Selangor during his tenure from 2009.
Selangor’s new foreign signing is defender Ramez Bayoub from Lebanon.
