The Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) have approved the travel and hotel allowances as well as an additional RM100 subsistence allowance for Malaysian League referees.
Referees’ committee chairman Datuk Astaman Abdul Aziz said the new allowances came into effect on Tuesday to coincide with the beginning of the new Malaysia Cup season.
“To avoid delays, the FAM have decided that cash payments must be made by the hosts, instead of the FAM, after each match,” he said yesterday.
“I hope the hosts will have no problem complying with the new arrangement in a bid to spur the development of football.”
Astaman said the new allowances and additional subsistence allowance were approved to alleviate the difficulties faced by referees and as a token of appreciation for their hard work.
He hoped that the allowances would motivate referees to strive to improve the standard of refereeing, which had been declining in recent years.
Astaman said the FAM were worried about the lack of qualified referees for the next season of the Malaysia League.
“In mid-August, many experienced referees failed the intelligence tests, causing them to wait another six months to re-sit the tests,” he said.
He also said that of 150 referees, about 120, mostly young referees, passed the tests, which met the standards set by the world governing body FIFA.
“This is worrying and further efforts will be made by the FAM to resolve the problem,” he said.
He hoped that the new allowances and the additional subsistence allowance approved would attract the younger generation to take up refereeing.
