Felda, who were ousted in the group stage last year, must thank goalkeeper Hamsani Ahmad for denying Negri from scoring on several occasions.
K. Rajan's second-half strike sealed victory but coach E. Elavarasan needs to tighten his team's play to hold on to their lead in Paroi on Friday.
Safiq Rahim, who captained Malaysia to victory at last December's AFF Cup, scored from two free kicks and turned provider for compatriot Amirulhadi Zainal in Selangor's win over Perak.
Selangor, however, conceded a late goal but coach P. Maniam was nonetheless a delighted man.
"I must thank my players for giving their 100 per cent. Safiq was in his element and I hope he maintains his form. We, however, must stay focused in the return leg," he said.
