Nigerian striker Onyekachi Nowha scores two goals as Kelantan win in Super League
Under-fire striker Onyekachi Nowha answered his critics with a brace in Kelantan 5-1 thrashing of Felda United in Kota Baru yesterday as the East Coast side maintained their two-point lead at the top of the Super League.
The 29-year-old Nigerian was on target in the third and 45th minute before Norfarhan Mohd (65th), Indra Putra Mahayuddin (69th) and Badri Radzi (84th) completed the rout. Felda replied through Azrul Ahmad in the fourth minute.
At the Jalan Besar Stadium, Shahdan Sulaiman's penalty four minutes from time earned Singapore's LionsXII a 2-1 victory over T-Team to stay in second place with 24 points.
Shahdan cooly slotted home from the spot past T-Team goalkeeper Mohd Iqbal Suhaimi, who was brilliant throughout the match, after teammate Agu Casmir was fouled in the box.
Lions, however, must thank their lucky stars for the victory as they almost blew it following Shahril Ishak's penalty miss in the 60th minute.
The homesters turned on the heat by scoring first through Shahril in the 51st minute before Zairo Anuar Zalani levelled proceedings, after a brilliant inter-change with Badrul Hisani Abdul Rahman, three minutes later.
At Sultan Ismail Nasiruddin Shah Stadium, Terengganu stayed at third spot in the table following their 0-0 draw with Johor FC.
Terengganu struggled to create chances without suspended striker Francis Doe and the injured Manaf Mamat.

Felda’s goal came via Azrul Ahmad’s equaliser in the fourth minute.
The big win saw the east coast side consolidating their position at the top of the league with 26 points from 11 matches.
Lions XII moved up to second spot after they edged T-Team 2-1 at the Jalan Besar Stadium. Midfielder Shahdan Sulaiman converted a penalty in the 85th minute to claim full points for the Singaporeans.

Felda United players Jaafar and Faudzi suspended for five matches
Felda United’s Mohd Hardi Jaafar and Mohd Firdaus Faudzi have been slapped with a RM5,000 fine each and suspended for five matches by the FA of Malaysia (FAM).
The duo were found guilty of climbing into the grandstand after the 1-0 defeat to Negri Sembilan in a Super League match at the Tuanku Abdul Rahman Stadium in Paroi on Jan 21 but were cleared of the second charge of attempting to fight with fans by FAM’s Disciplinary Committee.
Hardi, who was given a final warning for his action, said he accepts the committee’s decision.
“I am glad I did not get a heavier sanction,” said Hardi, after the committee meeting at Wisma FAM yesterday.
“I will continue to train with the team during the suspension.”
The suspensions begin on March 6, leaving the duo out of their Super League match against Singapore Lions XII. Felda United also will have to foot the bill for the committee meeting which totalled RM2,287 after their players were found guilty.
This is Hardi’s second offence. In 2010, Hardi, who was playing for Selangor, was suspended for six matches and fined RM6,000 following several incidents in the semi-final of the FA Cup match against Negri on April 3, 2010.
In the ill-tempered match between Negri and Felda United on Jan 21, referee Azman Jamaludin flashed two red cards during the game and a third after the final whistle.
Azman also handed out eight yellow cards (four per team) and red-carded Felda United’s Farid Ramli and Negri’s S. Kunalan during the game and Hardi after the game.
A fracas broke out as the players clashed after the match and the Negri supporters jeered and threw water bottles at the Felda team as they headed to the changing room.
One bottle hit Felda goalkeeper Mohd Hamsani Ahmad’s face, prompting Hardi and Firdaus to climb into the grandstand to confront the fans.
Hardi said that the slack security at the stadium was to be blamed for the incident.
“Negri had won the match so I don’t know why their supporters provoked us,” said Hardi.
“I think if the security was better this incident would have not happened. It has taught me a lesson and I hope the other involved parties will also learn from it.”
Meanwhile, Felda United assistant manager Faisal Zakaria said they will file a complaint to FAM’s Competition Committee on the poor security at the stadium.

Sime Darby FC and Pahang cause upset wins in FA Cup
Premier League Sime Darby FC and Pahang stunned Super League Sabah and Felda United 2-0 and 1-0 respectively in the first round of the FA Cup yesterday.
Pahang midfielder Mohd Hafiz Kamal rifled in a free-kick in the 41st minute to down Felda United 1-0 at the Hang Tuah Stadium in Malacca.
Sime Darby beat Sabah 2-0 with goals from defender Mohd Shazlan Alias in the 40th minute and Liberian striker Patrick Wleh five minutes later at the Selayang MC Stadium.
Sime Darby coach Ismail Zakaria was proud of his players who gave a disciplined performance against the much heralded Rhinos.
“It wasn’t easy, but my boys did really well and I’m proud of their performance,” said Ismail.
“Sabah play in the Super League and obviously were the favourites. But my players followed our game plan to stay compact and disciplined to win the match,” said Ismail
“We will take it one match at a time although the FA Cup isn’t our main target this season. Playing in the Cup will enable my team to mature faster.”
Sime Darby next meet fellow Premier League side USM FC in the second round at the USM Stadium on March 10.

Pahang to rely on Russian forwards for goals against Felda United in FA Cup
Pahang will have more depth in attack with the introduction of their two new Russian signings for the FA Cup match against Super League side Felda United at the Hang Jebat Stadium today.
Coach Dollah Salleh said Boris Kochkin and Eduard Sakhnevich would provide more fire upfront together with the Elephants’ in-form striker Mohd Azamuddin Akil, who has four goals to his credit.
“There is no pressure on the team but all eyes will be on our new Russian signings. I’m sure they will forge a better understanding with the team after a few matches,” said Dollah yesterday.
Pahang, FA Cup winners in 2006, are looking for a good run in the competition. But Dollah said their priority was in topping the Premier League to win promotion to the top flight. After seven matches, Pahang are in second spot in the 12-team standings with 16 points – two behind leaders Armed Forces.
Sime Darby FC, another Premier League side, will be in action against Sabah at the Selayang Stadium today.

Kelantan lose to Selangor but still lead standings in Super League
Super League leader, Kelantan had their unbeaten run broken by Selangor who edged them 2-1 at the Bukit Jalil National Stadium Tuesday night.
Despite failing to collect three points in their eighth match, the Red Warriors still remained at the top of the league table with a total of 17 points, two points ahead of nearest challenger, Perak.
Selangor appeared to be putting a more orderly game with Safiq Rahim scoring the first goal with a powerful shot in the 47th minute while Selangor newcomer made it 2-0 in the 75th minute.
However, Kelantan's consolation goal came in the 92nd minute courtesy of S.Subramaniam.
Perak, who are placed second in the league table, also lost 1-2 to Lions XII at the Stadium Perak, Ipoh.
Lions XII goals came from Mohd Sharil Ishak in the 17th minute and Shaiful Esah in the 75th, while Perak's solitary goal was contributed by Michal Kubala in the 54th (penalty).
Meanwhile, T-Team beat Felda United 3-0 at Stadium Hang Jebat, Melaka.
The goals for T-Team were scored by Mohd Faiz Subri in the 31st and 69th minutes, while Zairo Anuar made it 3-0 in the 84th minute.

Perak beat Sarawak to move into first place in Super League
Perak grabbed the lead in the Super League from Kelantan after edging Sarawak 2-1 at the Perak Stadium in Ipoh Wednesday night.
Perak's goals were scored by their Slovakian import Michal Kubala in the 7th minute and Mohd Fazrul Hazli Mohd Kadri (26th minute) while Vedran Muratovich netted the consolation goal for the visitors from a penaltry awarded in the 34th minute.
The win gave the Seladang who were in third place 15 points overall after six matches to dethrone Kelantan from the top position.
Kelantan fell into second place after only managing a 1-1 draw against Sabah at the Likas Stadium in Kota Kinabalu.
Their neighbours Terengganu also had a similar result against Selangor PKNS at the Sultan Ismail Nasiruddin Shah Stadium in Kuala Terengganu.
Meanwhile, Selangor and Johor FC also followed in the footsteps of Kelantan and Terengganu, carving out the same result on their home turfs.

Terengganu and Perak chasing unbeaten Kelantan for Super League title
The Super League title race is fast developing into another East Coast affair but not if Perak have anything to say about it while the situation at the bottom is getting just as heated.
Amidst revolt by their fans, Kedah caretaker coach Nidzam Adzha Yusof quit after just five games in charge in the first coaching casualty of the season, leaving his side second-from-bottom and with just one goal scored all season.
Defending champions Kelantan, however, are serenely leading the standings by a point from Terengganu and Perak, who both claimed precious away wins, after strolling to a 3-0 win over Kuala Lumpur on Saturday.
Coach Peter Butler did not broach the subject of retaining their title but heaped praise on his side who remain unbeaten after the Charity Shield defeat to Negri Sembilan.
"The players showed good understanding and teamwork and I told them the day before the game that we had to start well and maintain a high tempo and spirit. I'm glad they did that," said Butler after the game.
KL kept Kelantan at bay for the first half in large part due to the heroics of goalkeeper Amirul Abu Seman, who was making his Super League debut, but Kelantan's quality told in the second half as Norshahrul Idlan Talaha, Badhri Radzi with a delightful free-kick and Dennis Antwi grabbed the goals.
It left the city team rooted to the bottom of the standings with just one point and relegation after three seasons in the top-flight a real possibility.
"We tried to rise to the occasion but we failed to take our chances. The pressure really begin to tell when conceded the second and third goals, which were mostly due to our own mistakes," said KL coach Razip Ismail, whose side came closest to scoring when an Afiq Azmi effort hit the post before half-time.
Perak had a bit of luck when Khairan Ezuan Razali turned a cross into his own net as Felda United were beaten 2-1 in Malacca while Terengganu kept alive their own title ambitions as Francis Doe scored the winner in a 1-0 triumph over LionsXII in Singapore, leading coach Mat Zan Mat Aris to sing the Liberian's praises.
"That was his fourth goal in three games but this team is not all about Francis. He has made an important contribution with his ball control and ability to beat his opponent and score out of nothing.
"He was heavily marked against Lions but still scored the winner although we do have other players who have contributed as well. It's a team sport and all the players have a role to play not just Francis," said Mat Zan during a brief stopover in Kuala Lumpur en route to Kuala Terengganu yesterday.
Kedah, meanwhile, have put Radhi Mat Din in charge after Nidzam said he wants to return to coaching the President's Cup squad following a 3-1 defeat to Johor FC in Alor Star.

Kelantan beat Kuala Lumpur to maintain lead in Super League
Kelantan consolidated its position at the top of the Super League table while Terengganu, another east coast side, kept pace with the leader after collecting three points from their respective matches played Saturday night.
Kelantan beat Kuala Lumpur 3-0 at the Sultan Mohamed IV Stadium in Kota Baharu for their fourth win in five matches, amassing 13 points while Terengganu who scored a slim 1-0 victory over the Singapore Lions at the Jalan Besar Stadium in Singapore have 12 points.
Perak who beat Felda United at the Hang Jebat Stadium in Melaka have also collected 12 points but trail Terengganu in third place due to an inferior goal difference.
Norshahrul Idlan Talaha opened the score for Kelantan in the 46th minute while Antwi Dennis Agyre made it 2-0 in the 76th minute and Mohd Badri Mohd Radzi completed the convincing win with a 78th minute strike.
In Singapore, Francis Doe Forkey was the hero for Terengganu with his 77th minute goal.
In Alor Setar, Kedah's poor form in the league continued when Johor FC went home with all three points after their 3-1 win at the Darul Aman Stadium.

Sports Minister wants problems during Felda United-Negeri Sembilan match investigated
Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek today urged the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) to investigate the fracas during the Felda United-Negeri Sembilan Super League match at the Tuanku Abdul Rahman Stadium in Paroi on Saturday.
Shabery Cheek who was disappointed with the incident said such an incident should not have happened in the local league.
"We must take the best possible action to ensure similar incidents did not take place in the future," he told reporters here after accompanying Home Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein who visited a Simulation Shooting System Centre at the Bukit Kiara Rakan Muda Complex here.
During the incident, referee Azman Jamaludin gave the marching orders to S. Kunalan from Negeri Sembilan and Farid Ramli, Mohd Hardi Jaafar from Felda United, for their involvement in a fracas.
Negeri Sembilan won the match 1-0 through Shahurain Abu Samah's solitary goal in the 53rd minute.

Negeri Sembilan-Felda United match marred by 3 red cards
Threee red cards marred Negeri Sembilan’s 1-0 win over Felda United in a Super League match at Paroi on Saturday which also saw a players altercation with fans.
Felda’s Hardi Jaafar and Hamsani Ahmad both had to be restrained by security personnel after being provoked by Negeri fans while Negeri’s S. Kunanlan and Felda’s Farid Ramli were both sent off just before half-time after an incident which nearly led to a free-for-all.
Hardi was also shown the red card after the final whistle after reacting to Jean-Emmanuel Owona’s alleged spitting at him in a match which also saw eight yellow cards flashed.
Referee Azman Jamaluddin’s match report should make for interesting reading and it remains to be seen whether the FA of Malaysia (FAM) will take action against both teams for failing to control their players.
Felda coach E. Ellavarasan said emotions got out of control as both teams went blow-for-blow to win the match.
“It was a high-tension match. Both sides were giving it their best and trying to stop each other from scoring. It was a good game. that’s why it was so tense,” said Ellavarasan, who declined to comment on the referee’s performance.
In a match always simmering on the edge, left-back Farid and winger Kunanlan came to blows after the former’s tackle on the latter in first-half stoppage time leading to Azman to sending them off.
Shahurain Abu Samah’s 53rd minute goal was all that separated the two teams but matters got out of hand after the game ended.
Hardi was sent off for reacting to Owona’s alleged spitting at him while goalkeeper Hamsani, who had been taunted throughout the game, had a bottle thrown at him while walking off the pitch.
When he approached the grandstand heading to the dressing room, a spectator reached out to take a swing at Hamsani while an unidentified Felda player was seen in television images wading into the grandstand to confront the errant fan.
The incredible scenes left a dark mark on the game and Felda had to be given a police escort when leaving the stadium.
Fans turning unruly is no longer an isolated occurrence in Malaysian football with bottle-throwing becoming endemic in football culture.
FAM has previously resorted to handing out stiff fines to teams for lack of security but will now have to consider more stringent punishment, including playing to empty stadiums, to get the message across.
Felda’s Hardi Jaafar and Hamsani Ahmad both had to be restrained by security personnel after being provoked by Negeri fans while Negeri’s S. Kunanlan and Felda’s Farid Ramli were both sent off just before half-time after an incident which nearly led to a free-for-all.
Hardi was also shown the red card after the final whistle after reacting to Jean-Emmanuel Owona’s alleged spitting at him in a match which also saw eight yellow cards flashed.
Referee Azman Jamaluddin’s match report should make for interesting reading and it remains to be seen whether the FA of Malaysia (FAM) will take action against both teams for failing to control their players.
Felda coach E. Ellavarasan said emotions got out of control as both teams went blow-for-blow to win the match.
“It was a high-tension match. Both sides were giving it their best and trying to stop each other from scoring. It was a good game. that’s why it was so tense,” said Ellavarasan, who declined to comment on the referee’s performance.
In a match always simmering on the edge, left-back Farid and winger Kunanlan came to blows after the former’s tackle on the latter in first-half stoppage time leading to Azman to sending them off.
Shahurain Abu Samah’s 53rd minute goal was all that separated the two teams but matters got out of hand after the game ended.
Hardi was sent off for reacting to Owona’s alleged spitting at him while goalkeeper Hamsani, who had been taunted throughout the game, had a bottle thrown at him while walking off the pitch.
When he approached the grandstand heading to the dressing room, a spectator reached out to take a swing at Hamsani while an unidentified Felda player was seen in television images wading into the grandstand to confront the errant fan.
The incredible scenes left a dark mark on the game and Felda had to be given a police escort when leaving the stadium.
Fans turning unruly is no longer an isolated occurrence in Malaysian football with bottle-throwing becoming endemic in football culture.
FAM has previously resorted to handing out stiff fines to teams for lack of security but will now have to consider more stringent punishment, including playing to empty stadiums, to get the message across.
Negri Sembilan and Felda United are in trouble for ugly scenes
Negri Sembilan and Felda United are in hot water for the free-for-all after their Super League match at the Tuanku Abdul Rahman Stadium in Paroi on Saturday.
Nine-man Negri won 1-0 but the ill-tempered match saw two red cards flashed during the game and a third after the final whistle. Shahurain Abu Samah scored the winner in the 57th minute but the talking point was the fracas which has gone viral on YouTube.
During the match, referee Azman Jamaludin flashed eight yellow cards (four per team) and red-carded Negri Sembilan’s Farid Ramli (first half added time) and S. Kunalan (61st minute) as well as Felda’s Hardi Jaafar after the final whistle.
The match also saw Felda striker Yong Kuong Yong rushed to hospital after clashing with Negri goalkeeper Badrulzaman Abdul Halim. The former Kuala Lumpur player is reported to have fractured his ribs.
It was an ugly scene as the players clashed after the match and the Negri supporters jeered and threw water bottles at the Felda players as they headed to the changing room.
One bottle hit Felda goalkeeper Mohd Hamsani Ahmad’s face, prompting some of the players to climb into the grandstand to confront the fans.
Felda United assistant manager Faisal Zakariah said he would lodge an official complaint on the referee’s handling of the match.
“We are not happy with the referee as he clearly failed to take control of the game,” said Faizal.
“We will also report that our player was struck by a water bottle thrown by the fans. Our supporters tried to nab the person responsible but they were caught by the police.
“Our players actually climbed the fence to apprehend the culprit but it made the situation worse.”
Negri coach Azraai Khor Abdullah declined to comment on the refereeing, only saying his side had played well.
“What happened after the match is bad for the country’s image. Let FAM decide on the next course of action.” said Azraai.
“The team did better with Shukor Adan orchestrating play in midfield. We created a lot of chances but were denied by Hamsani.”
Azraai said he did not expect international Kunalan to react to the provocation and get sent off.
“I have told the players to stay cool at all times. It was certainly a surprise to see Kunalan, of all people, being expelled.”

T-Team lose as Terengganu and Singapore win in Super League
Liberian striker Francis Doe struck twice to end T-Team's unbeaten start in the Super League as derby rivals Terengganu claimed a 2-1 win in Kuala Terengganu yesterday to close within a point of leaders Kelantan.
T-Team, who had not conceded a goal before last night, took the lead through a Zairo Anuar Zailani penalty in the 12th minute after goalkeeper Sharbinee Allawee Ramli brought down Zachariah Simukonda only to concede a penalty within five minutes and have Shahril Faizal Sharifuddin sent off for hauling back Ashaari Samsuddin in the box.
Doe evened the score from the spot before lashing home the winner in the 56th minute to take his personal tally to three goals in two games.
Shahril's sending off was one of five yesterday, interestingly all before half-time, as both LionsXII and Sabah played with 10 men at Likas with Hariss Harun scoring the only goal in a 1-0 win for the visitors.
Hariss headed the winner for LionsXII off Mafry Balang's shoulder in the 20th minute before Mafry and Irwan Shah Arismail were dismissed for having a go at each other 14 minutes later.

But it took Terengganu just seven minutes to find the equaliser through Forkey Doe’s penalty after T-Team’s Shahril Faizal was red-carded for a foul on Mohd Ashaari Shamsudin.
Forkey Doe made sure the Turtles got all three points when he latched onto a fine through ball by Mond Ashaari to score the winning goal in the 56th minute.
The match continued to be closely fought but Terengganu managed to keep T-Team at bay until the final whistle.
