Defending champions Kelantan want a flawless run in their Malaysia Cup campaign.
And coach Datuk M. Karathu has warned him men to take a cautious approach if they do not want to lose points in their bid to get past the group stages.
“I have to remind the boys that these are not league matches. It is all about how to win the points and move to the next stage,” Karathu said yesterday.
Kelantan got their Malaysia Cup Group C campaign with off to a flyer with a 2-0 win over Sarawak in Kuching on Tuesday. The Red Warriors will play Johor FC at the Sultan Ismail Stadium in Kota Baru tomorrow.
Karathu said he was pleased with the performances of his players, including new striker Mohd Azamuddin Akil, on loan from Pahang. “It is a good start even though Azamuddin did not get on the score sheet. Although he missed a sitter, I am satisfied with his commitment,” said Karathu, who also gushed about the performance of national striker Norshahrul Idlan Talaha in scoring the opening goal and assisting S. Chanturu with the second.
“It is an advantage having a player of Norshahrul’s calibre. He can hold the ball, dribble and create chances for his team-mates,” said Karathu.
Kelantan are the favourites to retain the Malaysia Cup after their strong showing so far this season, bagging the Charity Shield (beating Selangor 2-0) and emerging champions in the Super League.
They came close to winning the FA Cup – losing to Terengganu (2-1 aet) in the final.
Karathu warned his players not to underestimate Johor FC, whom they have beaten twice – 4-1 (home) and 1-0 (away) – in the Super League this year.
“There is intense pressure playing in front of our demanding fans. The expectations and the demands of the fans are high. So, it is important for us to win and to keep the momentum going till the last game,” he said.
Felda United, under coach E. Elavarsan, also got off to a good start in the same group after defeating Johor FC 2-0 in Pasir Gudang on Tuesday. Felda will play Sarawak at the MBPJ Stadium in Kelana Jaya tomorrow.
